Composite materials consisting of a hard ceramic phase, traditionally tungsten carbide, and a ductile metallic binder phase, most often Cobalt, are generally called hard metals or cemented carbide. Cemented carbides are manufactured through a powder metallurgy processing route - wet milling, spray draying, compaction, and sintering.
Cemented carbide has an attractive combination of properties with high hardness and toughness. To tailor the properties needed for the application e.g. grain size and binder content can be adjusted. Furthermore, additional elements and/or phases can be added to improve the desired properties in new material designs.

At Seco Tools we develop and offer advanced products and solutions that makes metal cutting easier. We work together with our customers to share experiences and solve technical challenges – aiming towards the future of manufacturing.
Background and purpose
Powder production is the very first step in the manufacturing of cemented carbide tools – an important but rather unexplored process. Powder properties have a large influence on weight variation in the process steps that follow, which may cause shape distortions leading to a decreased yield. The powder is produced by wet milling and spray drying. In order to increase both yield and quality of cemented carbide powder, a deeper understanding of some fundamental aspects of powder properties is needed.
Your mission
In this project, you will evaluate cemented carbide powder properties and size distributions in Seco Tools’ R&D lab facilities in Fagersta. The work includes sampling and analysis using several different methods. Differences in powder properties are connected to process parameters. Other tasks may include production of samples, and evaluation of different sampling methods.
At the end of the summer, the work will be presented both orally and in writing.
Your profile
We’re looking for a student, with an interest in laboratory work and data handling. You’re preferably a master’s student within the field of Chemistry, Materials Science or Physics. Alternatively, you have prior knowledge of rheology and/or powder properties. Previous experience of lab work is meritorious. Since we are a global business, you have excellent communication skills in English, both in writing and in speaking.

You will contribute to an ongoing cross functional project at Seco Tools between R&D and production. You will be a part of developing and evaluating alternative ways of quality control in several different production steps, from powder to compacted cemented carbide inserts, before and after sintering. The work will mainly be in Seco Tools’ R&D lab facilities in Fagersta using several different characterization methods. Depending on interest, some parts can also be in production environment.

At Seco Tools, we develop and offer advanced products and solutions that makes metal cutting easier. We work together with our customers to share experiences and solve technical challenges – aiming towards the future of manufacturing.

Background and purpose
The first important process step in cemented carbide tool manufacturing is powder production – where the powder is wet milled to form a slurry and subsequently spray dried. In order to increase both yield and quality of cemented carbide powder, a deeper understanding of some fundamental aspects of the influence of slurry viscosity on powder properties is needed. The powder quality will affect all following process steps.

The mission
In the main part of this project you will develop a method to characterize the rheological properties of cemented carbide slurry using a capillary rheometer. The task entails theoretical calculations of flow and shear rates. The analyses will be made in the R&D lab facilities at Seco Tools in Fagersta. Differences in rheological properties will be connected to process parameters and powder properties.

Other tasks may include evaluation of alternate mixing methods of cemented carbide powders, as well as production of samples, sampling and analysis with several different methods.

Finally, the work will be presented both orally and in writing.

Your profile
You are preferably a master’s student within the field of Chemistry, Materials Science or Physics. Alternatively, you have prior knowledge of rheology and/or powder properties. Previous experience of lab work is meritorious. Since we are a global business, you have excellent communication skills in English, both in writing and in speaking.
